A.I.D. A PET, whose mission is to assist pet-owners who have AIDS or are HIV positive with their pet needs, is looking for volunteers to help with a holiday fundraiser. BOARD OF EDUCATION AND SERVICES FOR THE BLIND need volunteers to drive legally blind staff to appointments one day per week. Volunteer uses agency vehicle. Valid CT driver’s license required. Training will be provided. Information: Dr. Paula deSilva (860) 602-4144 or (800) 842-4510.

BOARD OF EDUCATION AND SERVICES FOR THE BLIND needs volunteers to help with a variety of office tasks: copying, collating, making phone calls, filing, organizing mailings, or possibly computer data entry. CAPITAL REGION CONFERENCE OF CHURCHES needs assistance with office projects. Help put together manuals, which would involve copying and hole punching. CHILDREN IN PLACEMENT is looking for volunteers to advocate for children within Probate Courts in New Britain and Southington. This rewarding activity can fit into the volunteer’s schedule. COURT SUPPORT SERVICES of the CT State Judicial Branch needs volunteers to assist with general clerical duties. Answer phones, take messages, reception, file or very light typing. CT CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER is looking for volunteers to be part of their Reach Out and Read program. Read to children in the waiting areas of the Medical Center, which could include the main clinic and other clinic areas. Weekday and early evening hours in Hartford. Volunteers of all ages welcome. CT RADIO INFORMATION SYSTEMS (CRIS), a radio reading service for persons with visual and/or other disabilities, needs volunteers in their new Windsor office. CT STATE DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS has volunteer opportunities at 20 facilities throughout the state. Assist with Addiction Services (Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous), basic education (GED tutoring, small group workshops, mentoring, and literacy), or Chaplaincy Services (worship, spiritual studies, and guidance counseling). CT VALLEY GIRL SCOUT COUNCIL would like to find volunteers to be troop leaders for the ADAPT program at the YWCA in Hartford. The girls, ages 11-16, have been in trouble with the law but are well supervised on site. Two hours anytime between 1:00-8:00 p.m., weekdays at leader’s convenience. DEPT. OF SOCIAL SERVICES, OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM, is seeking volunteer resident representatives for long-term care facilities. Volunteers would be involved in protecting residents' rights, problem solving, mediating between resident and facility administration, and providing information. ENTERTAINERS WANTED! High school and college students, individuals, families, or professionals – share your talents on Sunday afternoons for about one hour between 3:00-6:00 p.m. with a fun group of senior citizens at the Chatfield Retirement Community in West Hartford. EXCHANGE CLUB PARENT AND CHILD CENTER at Bristol Hospital is looking for volunteer office assistants. Answer phones, type, process mailings, register clients for classes, and perform other clerical duties. Hours can be arranged to fit volunteer’s schedule, either weekdays or weekends. FRIENDS OF THE FAMILY, a program of the Village for Families and Children, links teen parents with community services. HARTFORD ARTISANS’ CENTER at the Oak Hill campus in Hartford needs assistance for their weavers and quilters, most of whom are seniors, some with visual disabilities. Wind yarn, thread looms, sew, or cut – very basic skills. Weekday morning hours. Information: Donna Scalla (860) 242-2274 X3842.

HOCKANUM VALLEY COMMUNITY COUNCIL in Vernon needs medical escort/transportation volunteers. Drive elderly client to medical appointment, escort them to the office, and wait until they are ready to return home. Valid driver’s license and good driving record necessary. JUNIPER HOUSE MEALS is seeking volunteers to deliver fresh cooked meals to homebound and disabled individuals in West Hartford. Time commitment: as little as 15 minutes per week, between 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Car and driver’s license required. LOJERI PRODUCTIONS, a nonprofit organization in East Hartford which creates educational videos for other nonprofits, needs assistance with logging videotapes for editing. MEALS-ON-WHEELS PROGRAM through the Portland VNA would like to find drivers to deliver meals to senior citizens at their homes. Hours: at least 1 to 1 ½ hrs, once a month. MIDDLESEX UNITED WAY is seeking a volunteer Recreational Aid for a Saturday program for children with special needs. Encourage the development of the child’s group participation skills. MIDDLESEX UNITED WAY VOLUNTEER CENTER is recruiting Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Volunteers develop a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a child from a single-parent family. Provide support in academics, social skills or self-esteem building. Participate in games, reading, trips or homework. Time commitment: 6-8 hrs., twice a month for 6 months. MY SISTERS’ PLACE, Transitional Housing Program in Hartford, has several volunteer needs. Help prepare apartments for occupancy (painting, yard work, etc.). This could be a family or group project. NEW BRITAIN GENERAL HOSPITAL is seeking volunteer Ambassadors. Act as advocate and liaison to patients and visitors upon arrival. PREVENT BLINDNESS CT is looking for some caring individuals to help save sight and prevent blindness in children and older adults in their community. Volunteer at vision screenings and health fairs. RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM FOR ADOLESCENTS in Middletown is looking for tutors/mentors to work one-on-one with students. Serve as a positive role model. Bilingual Spanish helpful, but not required. SEABURY RETIREMENT COMMUNITY would like to find volunteers who would take the Gift Shop cart to the Assisted Living and Health Center residents, who are unable to get to the Gift Shop because of disability. VNA HEALTH CARE, INC., is recruiting volunteers to deliver meals to Hartford area elderly and disabled homebound persons on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Volunteer time commitment can be as little as one hour per month. Hours: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Car and driver’s license required. Older youth, adult, and retired volunteers welcome. WEST HARTFORD DEPT. OF HUMAN SERVICES needs volunteers to help frail, elderly, homebound persons with weekly grocery shopping.
