The Department of Labor (Deadline: April 28, 2005) (www.dol-tlc.org)
The Employment and Training Administration (ETA), U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announces the availability of $1,000,000 to award grants to eligible "grassroots'' organizations with the ability to connect to the local One-Stop delivery system.  

  • The agency expects to award approximately 40-50 grants.
  • Each grant amount is expected to range between $20,000 and $25,000

Eligibility Requirements:
Grassroots organizations must be non-profit organizations which:
have social services as a major part of their mission;
are headquartered in the local community to which they provide these services;
(a) Have a social services budget of $350,000 or less, or (b) have 6 or fewer full-time equivalent employees.

Target Stores Opens Community Giving Grants Program
(Deadline: May 31, 2005) (http://target.com/)
Applications are now available for the Target Stores Community Giving grants program, which currently focuses on three areas: arts, family violence prevention, and reading.

  • Applications must be submitted to a local Target store team leader, who will review the application and make funding recommendations.
  • Applications will be reviewed as they are received; therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply early.
  • Most grants will range between $1,000 and $3,000.
  • Applicants must be 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organizations or public agencies. Organizations in Alaska, Hawaii, or Vermont are not eligible for this program.

World of Children Awards (deadline April 25, 2005) (http://wworldofchildren.org

  • The World of Children Awards honor ordinary people doing extraordinary work on behalf of children. Each year, World of Children, Inc. places a global call for nominations seeking to identify selfless individuals whose unwavering commitment to children makes the world a better place for children to live and succeed. Organizations cannot be nominated.
  • Multiple awards are granted, ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.

Nature of Learning, the National Wildlife Refuge System's community-based environmental education initiative, seeks to use National Wildlife Refuges as outdoor classrooms.  

  • Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis to support start-up expenses associated with new programs.
  • Grants of up to $3,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis to provide continued support to existing Nature of Learning programs.
  • Schools or nonprofit organizations, including "Friends" groups, cooperative and interpretive associations, Audubon chapters, conservation organizations, and nature centers are eligible to apply for funding.
  • Programs must involve a partnership among a local school(s), community group (e.g., Refuge Support Group), and a National Wildlife Refuge. See the NFWF Web site for complete program information and application materials.

 William T. Grant Foundation Scholars Program Offers Support for Research on Youth Development (Deadline: July 1, 2005) (http://www.wtgrantfoundation.org/ )

 The foundation works to help create a society that values young people and enables them to reach their full potential.  

  • The Scholars Program supports four to six scholars over a five-year period. Priority research areas focus on the effects of contexts on youth development; improving the systems, organizations, and programs affecting young people; and adults' use of scientific evidence and their views of youth. The foundation focuses on young people ages 8 to 25.
  • Because the award is designed for early career researchers, applicants should be pre-tenure (if in a tenure-track position) or in a similar early career status (if not in a tenure-track position).See the William T. African American Success Foundation Offers Research Funding (Deadline: June 10, 2005)

 The African American Success Foundation offers the Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones Memorial Grant to provide financial support to graduate students and professionals who conduct research activities to study African American success, particularly in the area of education.
