2005 NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK

This year’s National Volunteer Week will be celebrated from Sunday, April 17 through Saturday, April 23.

National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteerism. Every President since then has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week as a time to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers at local, state and national levels. The Points of Light Foundation estimates that 64 million Americans – and 32% of Connecticut residents – volunteer in their community each year.

United Way of the Capital Area salutes all those who give of their time and talents to our community, and celebrates National Volunteer Week with presentation of its annual Dr. Frederick G. Adams Award and other activities.

VOLUNTEER "THANK YOU" PINS

For a final year, United Way will offer local nonprofit organizations a choice of complimentary "thank you" pins for distribution to their volunteers during National Volunteer Week. Pins currently in stock will be available to nonprofits on a first-come, first-served basis, at the reception area of United Way of the Capital Area, 30 Laurel Street, Hartford, Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., beginning March 21st. An agency representative will be asked to sign for the number of pins being taken at pick up.

DISCOUNT COUPONS

United Way is pleased to partner with six local organizations on a discount coupon that can be copied and given by nonprofits to volunteers as a thank you item during National Volunteer Week. Special access information is available to nonprofit organizations by contacting Kathryn Lauer at klauer@uwcact.org.
