Non-Profit Pulse Survey Reflects Uncertainty in Economy

The need for services is rising and the economic outlook is grim, according to the Fifth Annual Non-profit Pulse Survey. The survey, released by United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut in partnership with Hartford Business Journal, gauged the outlook of more than 400 executive directors of non-profit organizations throughout central and northeastern Connecticut and found that community support is needed now more than ever.

IRA Charitable Rollover Reinstated

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424) has been signed into law and includes an extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a distribution in any amount up to $100,000 per year from your IRA to your favorite nonprofit organization, free from income tax. Certain restrictions apply. 2008 United Way Community Campaign Is Under Way!

On September 5, at the United Way building in Hartford, 2008 United Way Community Campaign Chairman Douglas G. Elliot threw out the first pitch of the Campaign season and announced this year's Campaign goal: $28.4 million.

17th Annual Day of Caring

On September 5, 2008, some 5,000 volunteers from 85 local companies lent a hand at more than 350 Day of Caring project sites hosted by 155 nonprofit organizations throughout central and northeastern Connecticut the biggest single annual volunteer event in the area.

2008 United Way Community Campaign Courage Award Announced

The United Way Community Campaign presented its 15th annual Courage Award to Frederick Bohlen of Hartford on Thursday, June 26, 2008, during Jumpstart 2008, a training program for volunteer Campaign coordinators conducted at Saint Joseph College in West Hartford.

Bohlen, a Liberian refugee, was resettled in Hartford with his family by Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Hartford, a United Way partner agency. He was honored for overcoming adversity through the support of United Way funded programs from Catholic Charities and Urban League of Greater Hartford.
